WDRB answers your vegetable questions at Wallich Gardens | Morning

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Growing vegetables from start to finish and then eating or cooking them can give you a sense of accomplishment. But not getting to that moment can also be frustrating.

Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens will be answering viewer questions and helping you keep your garden thriving.

Question: Is there anything to prevent pumpkin borers?

Wallich: So there's no surefire way to prevent it. But be aware of the signs of the squash borer, which is often wilting. You can also delay planting your summer squash a little bit. If you do end up with squash borer, plant new plants in mid-July or early August and you won't have to worry too much about it, because the borers will have laid eggs by then.

Question: What kind of fence or what should I use to grow cucumbers? Also, what do you think about vertical garden squash?

Walich: All you can use for cucumbers, squash, or any kind of climbing plant is a traditional tomato stake. If you put them in the air, they don't really take up much space, and they allow for better airflow, which means less bugs and less rot.

Question: I want to plant radishes, is it too late to plant them?

Walich: It's a little too late now. Radishes are a cool-season crop, so they need to be done along with your cool-season crops, usually in late February or early March, and then you can do it again in the fall, which is late August or early September.
