One person was hospitalized as part of the outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In response to the investigation, Trader Joe's has voluntarily recalled Infinite Herbs brand organic basil sold from February 1, 2024 to April 6, 2024. The collected basil is from Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, Washington DC
The CDC and Food and Drug Administration said investigations into the outbreak are ongoing.
Recalled products should no longer be sold and may be past their expiration date at this point. However, the FDA has warned that if you freeze Trader Joe's organic basil and are unsure whether it is the Infinite Herbs brand, do not eat or use it and throw it away.
States affected by this Salmonella outbreak include Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. The actual number of cases is likely much higher because many recover without treatment and are not tested for salmonella, the CDC said.
