First, remove the old plant from the pot by digging out the roots. Next, loosen the soil and remove any compacted parts. Once the soil is mixed, dig a hole in the center of the pot and fill it with organic matter such as compost or coffee grounds. Add new soil and water to the pot and your pot is ready to receive your new plant.

Growing your own produce at home is a great way to save money at the grocery store, but the cost of soil and new plants can add up. Tips like these and keeping an eye out for ripped bags at the garden center can help you save money on your gardening budget.

Those with large yards can save hundreds of dollars over the growing season. If you only have a patio, the savings won't be as significant, but they'll still add up. In addition to being a cost-saving measure, there's plenty of evidence that growing plants has a ton of health benefits.

“Viewing plants was associated with changes in brainwave recordings, reduced feelings of stress, fear, anger and sadness, as well as reduced blood pressure, pulse rate and muscle tension,” the National Health Service reported.
