It's time for Sunday gardening. I'm here with Kari Ingle from Valley View Farm. Good morning. It's humid in the greenhouse. I know plants love humidity, but this is good because it prepares us for the heat-loving plants we're going to talk about. Yeah. And a lot of plants, I hate to say it, but fuchsias sell a lot in early spring. And pansies, I mean, pansies, they're already blooming. If you want to repot plants that are drooping in your garden, this is an option. Yes. And zinnias are great plants. They can handle the heat of summer. That lantana in the foreground is doing really well. That one in front of you is angelonia. It's like a summer snapdragon. I've never seen a better plant for getting height. This one is just as good. And the dragon wing begonia has red, white and pink flowers. It blooms everywhere. The portulaca, the purslane variety, has that flat leaf. That room is open and closed to the sun. Are they all striped like that or is it just one variety? It's one variety. It's the cupcake variety. But there are many others. I noticed that the leaves look like a succulent. Is it a succulent? It's very succulent. Yeah. And I noticed that the leaves look like wax. It probably holds a lot of moisture. You're totally right. And then Cassandra, this is also my favorite plant. I'm a big fan of Orioles. So if you can always plant an orange in your yard and it's a real orange, that's nice. Orioles oranges, I love this one. OK, so you can grow them in pots or you can do a whole planter with a variety that's tolerant of the heat. Yeah, this is an old-fashioned plant. Dracaena. Sorry. Tickle, tickle. Hmm, this will do. Okay, OK. If it's a small hanging variety, you can do something like a Calibrachoa. Hmm, I love it. I always say, “Let's think in 3D.” The tall ones, the ones that are sticking out. Yes, I love them. Usually, I'd plant them loose here. But just to be sure, we just… Yes, we're quick, but we have a couple of different ones that we can use. And let's look at the ones on the south side. We'll throw them in there as well. Uh, the smaller ones, you can put them in the sink like coleus that likes the heat of the summer. Again, angelonia and white. Uh, all of the petunias do a great job. Sorry. Uh, there are other trailers, like vinca and this monster, sweet potato vine. If you let them, they'll take over your wall. Yeah, interesting. Sweet potato vine. Do they really grow sweet potatoes? They actually do. Yeah, I thought about it, but they're not the tastiest variety, you know. Yeah, interesting. But it's good. It's cool. So I like that we can add them all together. And with these, you can keep your garden bright on hot days. Yes. I'm not saying you need to water them.It needs water and fertilizer, but it's pretty heat tolerant compared to other plants. How about you? I can handle the heat too. Ok. Thanks for these tips. Now I can keep my garden going through the summer. I'm happy to see this plant keep popping up. If you'd like your gardening questions answered, email our Sunday Gardener team today.
