Safdie Architects has released photos of its new LuOne mixed-use complex, its latest contribution to Shanghai's Luwan district, construction of which was completed last year.
Featuring an eight-story bronze-colonized retail tower and a 35-story office tower, the project, in the words of Senior Partner Christopher Mulvey, “responds to a much-needed connection to nature and community space in Shanghai's urban center.”

Thus, at the southwestern end of the tower, a glass-enclosed vertical “corner garden” is created, stacking seven four-storey garden spaces, creating the appearance of plants ascending or “climbing” along the length of the façade.

The 484,000-square-foot tower was designed to complete a program that began in 2018 with the construction of a 1.5 million-square-foot retail gallery. A triangular glass atrium forms the center of the composition and is surrounded by a spectacular toroidal dome skylight supported by a single column on the third floor.

Opening up the shop to the street helps activate the public space, and a kinetic art installation by American Ned Kahn invites visitors to observe wind patterns. Mulvey, who oversaw the opening of the Shanghai office in 2011, adds that the office offers “a haven in the heart of Shanghai.”

This is the fourth project Safdie Architects has completed for client and developer CapitaLand, following the Raffles City mixed-use development in Chongqing, China, and two projects in Singapore: Jewel Changi Airport and SkyHabitat residential tower in 2016.
The company also recently completed the Surbana Jurong Campus project and is set to develop a new expansion plan for the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel and resort by the end of 2029.
