Rain or shine, 'Tour des Fleurs' spotlights Wareham's best gardens

Seven houses, seven gardens — countless plants, flowers and vegetables.

On Saturday, July 13, from 9am to 3pm, seven homes in Wareham will open their doors to gardening enthusiasts, rain or shine.

The four houses are located in the same association neighborhood, each with its own unique character: perennials and complementary annuals are used, and vegetables are also grown.

The fifth house is just around the corner, with gardens that meander down to the water's edge, while the sixth stretches out to Buzzards Bay and is filled with topiary plantings, shrubs, succulents and arrangements.

The final home has views of a cranberry bog and is planted with hostas, evergreens, daylilies and garden plants.

Photos will be available for purchase in some locations, and one home will feature artwork from its owners.

Advance tickets are $35 and can be purchased on the Wareham Garden Club website. Online purchases close at 8pm on Friday, July 12. Tickets can be purchased the day of the tour at the registration desk at the Wareham Free Library (59 Marion Road) for $40.

The library will provide a map of the target homes to all who visit the gardens, and the library will allow garden visitors to participate in a silent auction offering gift certificates to garden centers, an ocean painting, a day at the pool with lunch, and a day on the boat with lunch.

Proceeds from Wareham Garden Club events help fund community projects such as city beautification, monthly garden therapy with the Wareham Council on Senior Citizens, and educational programs. They also help fund the club's scholarship program, which provides grants to Wareham residents who plan to continue their education with an emphasis on horticulture, agriculture, the environment, geosciences, biology and conservation.
