METAMORA TOWNSHIP — Murphy Elementary School's garden club has been busy this spring and summer growing plants and produce for local charities.

The Murphy Gardening Club, an after-school program for fourth- and fifth-graders at Pratt Road School in Metamora Township, recently donated a total of 245 tomatoes, 48 peppers, 23 bell peppers and one watermelon to the Good Samaritan of Eastern Michigan. In addition, the club hosted two successful fundraising events, including a garlic bulb sale in the fall of the school grown plant and a plant sale at the end of the school year.

The club, which maintains a 70ft by 30ft garden at the school, is raising funds to transform the garden space into a sensory garden that can be enjoyed by all students and staff at Murphy Primary School.

Club members would like to say “thank you” to Murphy PTC for the generous donation of five raised garden beds. Fundraising efforts will enable the club to fill the beds and begin the second phase of the project, which includes creating a shaded seating area.
