BOSTON — Spring has arrived in Massachusetts, which means gardening season is upon us. As the weather warms and the days get longer, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) encourages all gardening enthusiasts to visit their local greenhouse or nursery. Since the beginning of the year, growers across the state have been hard at work producing a variety of annuals and perennials that can add beauty to your home.

“As the effects of climate change continue, supporting local growers and nurseries is more important than ever,” said MDAR Director Ashley Randle. “As spring blooms, we invite you to visit more than 170 locations across the state where knowledgeable growers help residents create beautiful, sustainable gardens. With their expertise, you can make a difference. We can find the right equipment, seeds and plants for our climate. By working together, we can protect the environment and enjoy the beauty of nature at the same time.”

With more than 3,000 acres in production, Massachusetts' garden centers and nurseries are the state's largest agricultural sector. Many of these local businesses are multigenerational, family-owned businesses that support the local economy with more than $164 million in revenue each year. In addition to plants, seeds and supplies, we also offer florist services and host special events and seminars throughout the year to provide gardeners with the expertise to improve their green thumb.

“Massachusetts flower growers must conserve water, manage environmental resources responsibly, and cultivate beneficial insects and other natural management practices,” said Matthew Piscitelli, president of the Massachusetts Flower Growers Association. I am proud of our efforts to do so.” “This time of year brings excitement, joy, and beauty to amateur and professional gardeners alike. We are proud to be one of the largest agricultural departments in Massachusetts offering locally grown flowers. We are proud and appreciate the support and appreciation shown by our customers, both large and small.”
