“It would be sad if the seedlings died.”

Most gardeners love earth-friendly, helpful hacks, but it's important to understand how exactly to implement the concept to get the desired results.

TikTok user Simon Akeroyd (@simonakeroydgardener) shared a video explaining how to reuse toilet paper rolls to keep your plants healthy.

@simonakeroydgardener Cardboard toilet paper rolls make great eco-friendly plant pots. A great way to #recycle but make sure you plant them deep enough so the cardboard isn't above ground level. Otherwise the top of the cardboard will act like a moisture siphon and suck up all the moisture and let your dead and dried plant in again. #growyourself #growyourself #gardeningforbeginners ♬ Beautiful Day – U2

At the beginning of the video, Simon shows off a variety of plants he's successfully grown inside toilet paper rolls. “Toilet paper rolls make great eco-friendly plant pots, so a lot of gardeners recycle them,” Simon says.

One advantage of using them as pots is that you can plant them directly in the ground, without having to disturb new roots, and the rolls will break down naturally over time.

“But if you don't completely bury the entire roll of cardboard, the cardboard will act like a wick and soak up all the moisture,” Simon warns.

The video shows the results of this mistake: dead and dried plants.

Growing produce like fruits, herbs, and vegetables saves consumers time and money. Fewer trips to the store give you more free time, and growing your own food means you don't have to spend your hard-earned money buying it elsewhere.

Growing your own produce also helps the environment by reducing demand for mass-produced, store-bought, and globally shipped produce. Some stores sell produce packaged in plastic, so growing your own produce at home reduces the plastic that ends up in landfills. Reducing demand for store-bought produce also reduces air pollution.
