“Gardening lessons learned the hard way.”

Have you ever experienced something that you thought was harmless but ended up with disastrous consequences?

This Reddit user tried it and shared their results on r/gardening.

“This is my apple mint patch. It all started when I accidentally dropped a piece of mint and wondered what the worst thing could happen,” she captioned the post. “This is it. This is what could happen.”

Mint has a reputation for being invasive, growing aggressively and taking over gardens. Most mint species are native to North America, but some species grown in agriculture and horticulture have been introduced from Eurasia and elsewhere, especially apple mint, which is native to Western and Southern Europe.

But if we think carefully about the plants we choose, both in terms of their growth habits and their local characteristics, growing native plants can be a fulfilling and easy way to have a sustainable, positive impact on the environment.

Native plants not only add vibrancy and diversity to your garden, they also provide food and shelter for local wildlife and create a healthier ecosystem for pollinators year-round. This is ultimately beneficial to humans, as pollinators help protect our food supply. In addition to native gardens, other eco-friendly, low-maintenance landscaping options include planting buffalo grass, a plant native to North America, and xeriscaping.

“I have mint plants in my perennial garden that are a pain to maintain!” one person commented. “But they're a godsend as a mosquito repellent and can be transplanted into hard-to-grow places. The air conditioning beds and the beds under the rose bushes smell amazing. Another benefit? The chickens love to rest there in the afternoon, so when they're tidied up it smells amazing!”

“That's a gardening lesson we learned the hard way,” said another. “Well, at least we can always make good mojitos.”
