Fun Event at Grassroots Garden: Gamelan Performance and Garden Games

Grassroots Gardens is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors and Mother Nature. Most Grassroots Garden outings are simply “visiting 104 gardens across Western New York.” However, there are some events that are more planned in nature. Throughout the month of June, the community is invited to participate in several free, fun events.

The first event will be a Grassroots Gamelan Indonesia Wayang Puppet Performance and Concert, taking place on Saturday, June 8th from 1pm to 4pm at the Lombard Clark Community Garden (71 Lombard Street, Buffalo NY 14208 – across from Eugene V. Debs Hall). This free, all-ages event will feature live music, puppetry craft tables and more.

“We are thrilled to be making our debut in the diverse Broadway Fillmore District,” said Matt Dunning, Executive Director of Nusantara Arts. “Nusantara Arts will be bringing guest artists from Indonesia, including Midyanto and Wakidi, to the area, truly world-class performances. Grassroots Gamelan's aim is to uplift the community and activate special community grassroots garden spaces across the city. The performance will be large-scale and fun. We've been working on this special production for the past two months and it will be an event not to be missed.”

Story: “Chiptoning” – Chiptning is one of the original Javanese wayang stories. This story is a meditation on meditation, courage and mastering one's inner self in order to achieve great things for others.

Activities & Workshops: Wayang Puppet Craft Table – Make your own Wayang Kulit shadow puppet to take home!

Accessibility: Performances are held on the street under a large tent and are wheelchair accessible and feature ADA-accessible restrooms.

The second event will be Games in the Garden, featuring the competitive board game “Wingspan,” which Grassroots Gardens says is a competitive board game in which participants build habitats to attract colorful birds to live there. Game Day will be held on Thursday, June 20th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Broadway Community Garden (389 Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14204) and new players are welcome to join.
