Reddit user Tccoope shared how he thins out the dead stems every year because they “keep growing.”

“My wife and I sell hosta shoots every spring for $3 a pop, or four for $10,” he says.

“We moved last fall so we didn't have as much inventory this season but we still made a $1,000 profit. Last year we made closer to $4,000,” he continued.

He explained how he sells through Facebook Marketplace and by attending art and plant-focused festivals.

“At this point, it's just a little side business for us,” he said.

And the pair have no plans to stop their tree-planting project.

“I'm thinking of getting my wife to quit her job and building this into a complete small business and expanding into other plants besides hostas, but that's probably a few years away,” he said.

They sold the hostas and also seemed to have found a way to preserve them.

“The best part is that the hostas are still growing in the ground and don't take over the whole flower bed every year,” they say.

One Reddit user was curious about the size of their space.

“Wow, that's a lot of plants! Do you have a big garden with lots of flower beds or are you growing them specifically to sell?” they asked.

“There were about 15 to 20 hosta plants in the flower beds around our old house,” they replied.

“Most years we can pick 25 to 50 sprouts per plant, which makes about $60 to $120 profit per plant per season,” he continued.

Their business has grown into a family operation.

He explained that he also has his own bed at his mother-in-law's house.

Intentionally growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests can help keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip, and chives. For pesky weeds in your garden, Amazon's Grampa's Weeder – The Original Stand-Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handles ($45) is a handy tool. You don't have to bend over to use it.

“Because we moved in the fall this year, we were mainly working on those flower beds and weren't able to create a new garden in our new home,” they said.

“This spring, we had six hosta plants growing in our new home, but they were so thin we couldn't pick any new shoots,” they continued.

They have also expanded the planting process.

“We've divided each one and transplanted a further 12 around the house, so we'll have 18 to divide next season. We're also building a little greenhouse to grow plants from seed.”

According to Good Earth Garden Center, hostas are perennial plants with leaves that come in a variety of sizes and colors.

These shade-loving perennials typically grow between 1 foot and 3 feet.

It also produces long stems with flowers at the ends.
