TikTok gardener RedLeafRanch (@redleafranch) shared a simple way to save space in your garden by growing potatoes in pots.

@redleafranch No space? No problem! Grow #potatoes in containers 🤩🥔✨ #gardening #farmlife #abundance ♬ original sound – redleafranch

“The trick is to not pack the container too full when you plant the potatoes,” he says. “Add a bit of garden soil or compost to the bottom and then plant the potatoes.”

“Give it a few days and before you know it you'll start to see growth,” he continues. “As the potatoes continue to grow, keep adding soil. I keep adding soil until only new shoots are sticking out.”

RedLeafRanch also has some tips for growing potatoes successfully: Make sure your pot or container has good drainage, and choose soil that drains well to avoid overwatering your potatoes, otherwise they will be at high risk of rotting.

Onions and carrots can also be grown in pots.

How it helps

If you're short on garden space or only have a balcony or patio available, this is a great way to save space and still grow lots of potatoes. You don't even need to buy pots for this trick – you can plant potatoes in any deep container, such as a cardboard box or a gardening bag.

Gardening doesn't have to be hard, and these tips will help make the benefits of gardening accessible to more people. Spending time in the garden reduces stress, strengthens bonds, and increases feelings of happiness.

Plus, gardening is great exercise. People who garden regularly are healthier and get more fiber in their diet, which means they have a lower risk of developing diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
