Indiana City Ranked Worst in America for Urban Gardening in 2024

Indiana is known for growing corn and agriculture in general, so it's surprising that one city in Indiana actually has the worst urban gardening in the nation. Sounds crazy, right? So I did some research on what urban gardening is and how Hoosiers can find a better way to make it happen.

What is urban gardening?

Urban gardening is not your traditional backyard garden. In the city, we don't have much garden space, so it's like a miniature garden. You also cannot start landscaping in your apartment or condominium.

Urban gardens are important for areas that don't have fresh vegetables nearby. Neighbors in the area take turns tending the garden and may freely share vegetables.

They come in many forms, from small container gardens on balconies to large community gardens in public spaces. One of the main benefits of urban gardening is that it gives people living in urban areas access to fresh, healthy produce that is otherwise unavailable in urban areas. This is especially important in low-income areas and so-called “food deserts” where access to fresh food is limited.
