“The best way to use old corks”

If your plant is inexplicably dying, you may have a problem with the drainage in the pot. Luckily, an old wine cork can help.

On TikTok, gardener David Domoney (@daviddomoney) shared a simple way to literally make plants grow.

Placing the flower pot directly on the ground can cause damage to the flower pot.

“What sometimes happens is that if you make a container and put it on the patio, the bottom of the patio seals with the bottom of the pot, and the drainage holes can't release moisture, and eventually [the plants] “It gets waterlogged and the plants die,” he said.

You can buy “pot feet” or you can easily make your own at home – David uses wine corks.

“I place them under a container and then place the container on top of the wine corks,” he explains.

How it helps

Cork is an incredibly sustainable material. It's harvested with minimal impact on the tree, and the cork regenerates over time. It also biodegrades within a few years and is easily recycled. Because it's recyclable, companies like ReCork are working to turn used cork into shoes, coasters and more. ReCork collects old cork and crushes it to “be used as a replacement for petroleum-based foams and plastics in consumer products,” according to the company's website.

Though you might have to get creative, corks are easily recycled and with just a little bit of hot glue you can make anything your heart desires, from coasters to mirrors.
