“They stretch as the tree grows.”

Gardening is a fun and healthy way to get outside and grow your own food. It can also be quite expensive, so it's helpful to find more affordable ways to do it. A gardening expert on TikTok is showing her followers innovative ways to reuse tights in the garden.

Simon Akeroyd (@simonakeroydgardener) is a gardening wizard who shares tips on all things garden, from growing celery to starting seedlings. In one clip, he shows his followers three ways to use tights in the garden.

@simonakeroydgardener 3 ways to reuse old stockings or tights in your garden! 1) Use them as tree ties. They stretch with the wind so they don't cut the tree. They also stretch as the tree grows so they don't pinch the tree. Also, make a thick knot between the tree and the post to prevent the wind from hitting and damaging the tree. 2) Use the stockings as a space-saving storage for all your recycled pots. Hang the stocking on a nail and cut off the end. Now you have a handy pot dispenser. 3) Use a piece of stocking or tight to cover the drainage hole of your pot. This will stop the compost from running out the bottom. #reuse #recycle #repurpose #fyp #foryou #foryoupage #growyourown ♬ You Sexy Thing (Single Version) – Hot Chocolate

The first use for tights is as tree ties to help support and aid the growth of young trees. Tights are a great, free option for this purpose. “The tights stretch in the wind so they don't snap the tree, and they stretch as the tree grows so they don't pinch the tree. You can also tie a thick knot between the tree and the stake to keep the wind from damaging the tree,” Akeroyd writes in the caption.

Secondly, you can use stockings to store your pots: just stuff all your recycled pots into one leg of a pair of tights, cut off the toe and hang it on the wall – now you have a space-saving pot dispenser.

Finally, the video explains, “Use a piece of stocking or tights to cover the drainage holes in your pots. This will stop the compost from leaking out the bottom.” Since compost nourishes your plants, this tip might also help your plants grow bigger and stronger.

Reusing and recycling is one of the best ways to reduce waste by keeping it out of landfills. Plus, you can save money by reusing old items rather than buying new, purpose-built products.

In this case, using tights in the garden will extend the life of your garments, with surprisingly big benefits: a study carried out by the Waste and Resources Action Programme found that “increasing the average lifespan of each garment by just three months of use reduces carbon, water and waste footprints by 5-10% each.”
