Contura lifestyle expert Catharina Björkman calls growing plants at home “one of life's simple pleasures.”

“Growing plants can help purify and improve air quality, reduce stress, improve mood and even promote healthier eating habits,” she said.

Spider Web Plant

Bjorkman said spider web plants are one of the most popular houseplants and “grow particularly well” when grown in the bathroom.

She said they are easy to clean, have air purifying properties and are pet and child friendly.

It absorbs harmful gases and unnatural toxins from the air, including formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, and carbon monoxide.

“During the summer, the plant produces small white flowers on long stalks that contain caterpillars called 'babies,'” Bjorkman explains.

Many people think that this plant looks like a small spider, which is where the plant got its name.

Gardening experts have offered helpful tips for growing home extensions.

Once the baby plants start to take root, “just cut off the runners,” Bjorkman says.

This is the stem that connects the baby plant to the main plant.

Finally, keep your puppy in a glass of water for up to five days.

Bjorkman explained that this is to help the roots develop before planting in a pot.

There are financial benefits to buying plants for your bathroom.

“Buy one spider web plant and you won't need to buy two,” she says.

To keep vegetable-eating bugs at bay, use netting like Amazon's Garden Netting Pest Barrier ($8). Try sacrificial planting to reduce pesticide use and keep pests out of your garden. Intentionally growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests can help keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip, and chives. For pesky weeds in your garden, Amazon's Grampa's Weeder – The Original Stand-Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handles ($45) is a handy tool. You don't have to bend over to use it.

aloe

Another plant that thrives in the bathroom is aloe vera, according to Bjorkman.

It doesn't require much care or water and can absorb moisture from the air.

“As an added bonus, it has medicinal properties,” she added.

The sticky sap helps soothe skin conditions such as burns, scrapes, and scratches.

“You just break off a few leaves and apply the healing gel to your skin,” she explained.

Ivy

Finally, Bjorkman said, “The warm, humid environment of a bathroom also makes it the perfect place for ivy to crawl.”

She said it looked best when the leaves were draped over a shelf.

Even if your bathroom doesn't have much humidity, misting it daily will help keep the plant vibrant green.

According to the experts at Patch Plants, “It will grow in most light conditions, but does best in bright light.”

Caring for plants is a “therapeutic activity that the whole family can participate in,” Bjorkman said.
