First, buy a bunch of fresh thyme at the grocery store. Remove the leaves from the bottom few stems. Submerge all the stems in water and leave for a few weeks until they develop roots.

At this point, you can remove it from the water and plant it in compost to encourage further growth, or you can plant it in a pot or in your garden to grow larger.

Many recipes only call for a teaspoon or two of fresh herbs, and it can seem wasteful to buy a whole bunch at the supermarket when you know you won't need it all. If you grow your own herbs, you can take only what you need and let the rest grow, without wasting money or worrying about moldy produce.

Expanding your garden and growing more of your own produce will save you a lot of time and money. Growing your own food will save you more money by eliminating time-consuming shopping trips. Plus, gardening has many other benefits. The larger your garden, the greater the benefits.

Gardening is known to improve your physical and mental health – it can help relieve stress, improve your mood and provide healthy exercise that's good for your heart.

A food-filled garden is also a great way to have a positive impact on the environment: Eating what you grow in your garden reduces the demand for mass-produced, store-bought, and globally shipped produce — reducing the need to burn polluting energy for transportation.
