How do rainwater tanks contribute to the environment? This topic was explored at the Art of Gardening Club meeting held June 5 at Peace Lutheran Church.
Rainwater tanks not only reduce runoff and conserve water, but they can also provide a water source during droughts.
“We are allowed to collect rainwater,” member Kim Tanner pointed out.
Some areas have imposed water use restrictions for watering lawns and gardens, washing cars, etc.
Cora Crichlow spoke on rainwater tanks on behalf of the Ashland Soil and Water Conservation District. She is a recent graduate of Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) with an Associate of Science degree in Agricultural Communications.
Noah Stanley, an environmental science major who will graduate from ATI Wooster in December, was introduced. He just started working as an intern on June 3rd.
As a water quality specialist, Crichlow promotes stormwater conservation and works with farmers, teaching them how to retain nutrients and fertilizer in the soil.
Mr Crichlow offered tips on how to use rainwater tanks successfully, one of which is to have a screen on the top to prevent mosquitoes and leaves from getting in. Members were also instructed on preparing their rainwater tanks for winter.
Rainwater tank kits and tanks are available for purchase.
The painted rainwater tanks can be seen at Loudonville's Central Park from June 18-25, at Ashland BalloonFest at Freer Field from June 26-July 1 and at Ashland's Corner Park from July 2-8.
The Soil and Water Conservation District is located in the Ashland County Courthouse, 110 Cottage St., Ashland.
The gardening-related activities to celebrate National Garden Week, June 2-8, were suggested by Chairperson Kathy Burger. Originally celebrated in April, in 1990 the first week of June was designated as National Garden Week.
Outgoing President Pat Edwards received a belated thank you and was presented with a farewell gift in appreciation of her leadership as president. She served as co-president with Berger last year.
The bring-your-own lunch will be held July 3. Members will meet at 11 a.m. at Freer Field.
