Gardening tips for early June | 9news.com

Planting your garden is well underway, here are some tasks that need to be done now.

DENVER — Getting it all planted is just the first step.

Fertilizing step 2. At this time of year, I use an all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer for potted plants. Follow the directions and don't overdo it. I like to fertilize my potted plants about every 10 days.

It's not too late to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials. Take care when moving or transplanting perennials. Water plants thoroughly before digging and prepping holes in their new location. Dig up plants. Divide plants if necessary.

Plant your plant in the new hole. Don't step on it. Never step on it, you'll just squeeze all the oxygen out of the soil, which the roots need.

Create a trench of soil around the plant, which will retain water and keep the root mass moist until the roots can re-establish.

Newly planted seedlings may wither in the midday sun. Don't worry, they will bounce back when the weather cools.
