7 gardening tasks to do before June ends

Summer is just around the corner, which means there are some tasks to do this month to get your garden ready.

From planting your summer flower beds to watering your hanging baskets, there's plenty of work to do before the sun (hopefully) arrives.

For anyone looking to make the most of their outdoor space in the warmer months, follow this handy checklist to prepare your garden.

Garden gazebo expert Samantha Richards from Gazeboshop has shared seven tasks you should start doing this month to make the most of your outdoor space.

What to do in the garden in June

Tie new stems of climbing or rambling roses to supports

“You might think you've missed the season to plant beautiful flowers this year, but you can still plant potted roses through June,” says Samantha.

The expert adds: “Roses add sophistication and vibrant colour to any outdoor space, and now is the perfect time to tie new stems of climbing or rambling roses to supports to encourage growth and more flowers.”

Taking Hydrangea Conifer Cuttings

Samantha suggests that if you already have hydrangeas in your garden, you can propagate more plants this month by taking softwood cuttings.

“Hydrangeas make a lovely addition to outdoor spaces and can be used to liven up flower beds and flowerbeds,” she commented.

The pro adds: “To take a cutting, start by using clean, sharp pruning shears to snip off a new, non-flowering shoot about 10cm from just above where it joins the stem.

“Remove the bottom leaves from the cutting and, for best results, dip the bottom of the cutting in rooting hormone before planting it in a clean pot with fresh soil.

“Keep it in a cool, moist place out of direct sunlight until you're ready to repot it.”

Continue planting your summer flowers in pots or flower beds and water them regularly.

“You can also plant bright summer flowers in pots and flower beds in June to prepare for summer,” the expert explained.

Samantha suggested that geraniums, sweet peas, pansies and marigolds can all be planted from seed, or from sprouted seedlings without much effort.

She adds: “Remember to water newly planted plants regularly and pinch off the tips while they are young to encourage even larger flowers.”

Water Container Displays and Hanging Baskets

“As the weather starts to warm up again throughout June, it's important to keep an eye on water container displays and hanging baskets and water them regularly,” says the pro.

Samantha also noted that if temperatures remain mild, you can water them every few weeks.

On the other hand, during hot weather, it's likely to happen every day.

Experts recommend avoiding rainy days to avoid overwatering.

Get into the habit of watering your outdoor plants daily, but check the soil first.

Samantha explained: “Hanging baskets aren’t the only things you should be caring for every day this month.

“Outdoor plants in the garden also need to be watered daily, but always check the soil first.

“As spring rains run off into summer, you may find that the lovely British weather is already protecting you. Just be careful not to overwater as this can cause plants to wither.”

Moving citrus fruits outdoors

“If you're growing citrus fruits, now is the time to move them outside,” experts say.

“These plants grow best in humid environments, and to achieve this during warmer months, place your citrus tree on a large tray lined with gravel and lower the water level to just below the gravel.

“As the water begins to evaporate, it will create moisture around the tree. We also recommend misting the tree with water in the early morning, especially on hot days.”

Don't forget to water (and wipe) your houseplants

The pro explains: “While you may be focusing most of your attention on the outdoors this time of year, make sure you don’t neglect your indoor plants in the process.

“Even if you don’t have direct sunlight, the soil is likely to dry out as temperatures rise and the hours of sunlight get longer.

“This month, check the soil on your houseplants two to three times a week and water them if necessary.

“Some houseplants tend to collect dust, so wipe them down regularly to keep them looking good.”
