5 Garden Decor Trends We Love from Magnolia Silos

I'll be honest, I'm not a professional gardener, but during my recent visit to Magnolia Silos, I fell in love with Furneys: Retro Plant Shop. As a Home Editor, my gardening skills are limited to indoor plants and decorative planters, so Furneys was right up my alley. The plant shop is filled with midcentury furniture and fixtures, all with a '70s vibe. In addition to hanging plants and potted cacti, the plant shop is full of quirky garden decor pieces that might just turn me into an indoor horticulturist.

From the plants themselves (cute cacti, huh?) to the whimsical decor (I brought home some stained glass plant pokes), these are all garden decor trends that I loved at Ferny's.

Named plants

While seasoned gardeners will tell you that every plant has a technical name, I love how Ferny's names its plants. Each plant has a brass plaque engraved with a human name, so you can take Barb or Wilma home and display them in your window. Plant pairs have creative names like Lois and Clark. I'm crazy about this trend; naming your plants to match their personalities might help you remember to water them more often. Luckily, the staff at Ferny's also know the real name of each plant and are happy to give you tips on caring for your new home.

70s-inspired color palette

When you walk into Ferny's, your eye is immediately drawn to the 1970s color scheme: earth greens, deep browns, and mustard yellow, accented with shades of pastel pink and mint green. Every item in the store fits that aesthetic, yet is modern enough that it would fit seamlessly into any contemporary decor at home.

Non-traditional containers

Ferny's sells lots of little pots and planters, but most of the actual plants are planted in different colored mugs and dishes that fit the '70s color palette. It's easy (and inexpensive!) to try this trend at home: just hit up a thrift store and pick out containers that fit your aesthetic. Mugs are perfect for small indoor plants, while decorative baking dishes and bowls work well for larger plants or outdoor displays. (Just remember to cut drainage holes in the bottom.)

Mushroom motif

Fungi-inspired motifs are one of this year's top interior decor trends, so I was happy to find a ton of mushroom decor items at Ferny's. From tiny red-and-white clay mushrooms that you can stick in your garden soil to beautiful stained-glass plant stands, there were plenty of ways at Ferny's to add a whimsical fungus (or two) to your outdoor garden or indoor houseplant collection.

Miniature Cactus

Speaking of small potted plants, succulents have been all the rage in recent years. I love them because they require very little water, but I'm getting a bit bored of traditional succulents, so it was refreshing to see so many spiky, funky-looking cacti. Ferny's has a slightly southwestern, destination aesthetic, so these miniature plants fit that vibe perfectly.
