10 Clever Gardening Hacks for Homeless People

Window boxes are known for adding a charming country cottage feel to the exterior of a home, but they don't have to be limited to a specific type of property. Ornamental horticulture expert Gary Bachman said in the Southern Gardening podcast produced by Mississippi State University Extension Service that window boxes are equally effective in small country homes and modern mansions. The great thing about window boxes is that they can be used in any home that has sunny windows. You don't need any outdoor space at all, and you don't even need to be able to access the window boxes from the outside. Once set up, just open the windows and tend to your plants from the comfort of your home.

Backman points out that the size of your window box is an important consideration. “It needs to be proportionate to your window. If it's too small, it'll look lost in the window frame. If it's too long, it'll look like a floral mustache. Just like our landscapes, windowscapes look beautiful in a variety of sizes, colors, and textures.” Window boxes come in a variety of types to suit any home style, from containers made from old wooden pallets for a rustic look to matte black metal planters for a more industrial feel. This coir-lined metal window box from Amazon comes with brackets that can be adjusted to fit different size windows.
